Moonwalk was a modifier that was deprecated in English notation in 2008 by the UPSB V3 Research Department[1]. It was decided that since shadows were notated to go up or down fingerslots without the modifier, it was not required for other tricks.
The term stems from Japanese notation, where it still remains in use today. This is because Japanese notation does not notate fingerslots, so the modifier is needed to annotate which direction the trick is going.
