Fen Spinner Wiki:Bias

From Fen Spinner Wiki

At some point when writing articles on the wiki it's highly likely that you're going to be biased to some degree about the topic you're writing about. Usually this is about mods, spinners and communities you either like or dislike. Going beyond personal bias, there are also individuals, communities and ideas that completely oppose the nature of the Fen Spinner community or even the aims of the wiki project.

It can be extremely tempting to write with a biased slant or even outright use articles as retaliatory attacks, but these types of edits erode the integrity of the wiki as a source of information in the community.

TL;DR just use ChatGPT

If you paste your gathered information into ChatGPT and ask it to copyedit it in a "Neutral, mediawiki style" it will do 90% of the work for you, assuming that you went through the required preliminary effort of collecting all of the important details for it to handle the style side for you.

Avoiding Bias

Neutral tone

State details as a matter of fact. Avoid giving compliments or insults to a mod, individual or community when writing about them, instead focus on actions and qualifiable traits. Did they do something that was received positively or negatively? Provide sources where possible to the reactions of the community, rather than assumptions. On another matter, where statements are made about community opinion but not sourced, this is not a cause for deletion of the material. Rather, further investigation either personally or through the wiki team and the talk pages is needed to determine evidence and suitability of statements relating to community opinion.

The purpose of the wiki is not to create attack pages but to inform about the state of the community and the hobby. This means that shying away from controversial topics is not a guideline. For example, Minwoo's cheating in WC12 is damaging to his character to write about, but is informative and truthful. Similarly making a claim that ChauTran cheated in WC08 is also valid, as there is suitable amounts of evidence showcasing the merits of the claim.

The goal is to showcase the truth of the hobby, good or bad. Avoiding bias is to avoid eroding truthfulness and honesty, not to prettify history.

Don't write about it at all

There are many individuals that meet notability guidelines that you might not feel deserve a good article. Rather than deface or manipulate an article to suit the bias, it's often better to leave the article a stub or in its current state. The wiki can be edited by anyone, and while there is no limitation on who you can write about so long as they meet notability guidelines, there is also no requirement for editors to make or improve an existing page.

Likely the the page will eventually be edited by someone with a neutral tone. Or not.

Self-pages are usually terrible

No matter how tempting it may seem, avoid writing your own page as much as you can. It's extremely difficult to avoid bias when talking about yourself, and similarly easy to start talking about matters from a single point of view, omitting key details. If this is unavoidable, edits should be concise and brief, such as formatting changes or correcting an incorrect piece of information e.g. date that you started spinning.

Self-pages are considered worthy of deletion unless specifically proven otherwise, and the same goes for self-edits.

A self-page that does not meet notability guidelines will be immediately deleted. You can instead place information about yourself on your User Page e.g. User:username, instead of making a specific spinner page.
