Tournament Structure
The tournament consisted of six rounds with the first two rounds being group phases. For the first group phase, all combos are considered to be part of a single group, with the top 32 spinners passing to the next round. Placements were determined by averaging the ranks assigned to them by the judges.
For the second group phase serpentine seeding was used to place spinners into groups to reflect roughly average performance levels distributed among the group members. This was a significant change over previous World Tournaments, where initial group seeding was random. The top 4 spinners of each group by average rank continued to the next round.
From Round 3 onwards the remaining 16 contestants battled in single elimination format for the remaining four rounds. R3 seeding matched participant ranks 1 to 4 and 2 to 3. R4 seeding matched spinners from the 1 to 4 R3 battles randomly to spinners in the 2 to 3 R3 battles. R5 matched the winner of the R3 rank 1 bracket to the winner of the R3 rank 2 bracket. Round 6 matched the remaining 2 contestants with a side match for 3rd place for the contestants that lost in R5.
