The first two rounds consisted of two group phases, in which the top 4 ranked spinners by the judges would pass to the next round. In Round 1 there were 8 groups, and Round 2 there were 4 groups. Due to the amount of people signing up being a prime number, Group H in the first round had 9 participants instead of 10.
Afterwards, the remaining 16 spinners competed in a series of single elimination matches for the last four rounds, until a winner is declared. A third place match was also held for the losing participants of Round 5.

The Pen Spinning World Tournament 2021 was announced on June 15th 2021[1], starting with the participant deadline for the first round on the 28th of August.[2]

History

The tournament was announced on Twitter by the Pen Spinning Board of Directors on June 15th, 2021 with community registration due by July 25th[3]. Participant lineups were announced August 7th, and the groups for the first round were drawn the day after on August 8th. First round videos were due August 28th, with all participants successfully submitting videos on time.

For the first time in the history of the event pre-filming was formalized in the rulebook. It was retroactive, and allowed combos filmed before the ruling to be submitted to the tournament. Commentators remarked on the predictability of the tournament, as spinners with combos already filmed were considered out of reach for the other participants.

Questionable judging moments were highlighted in the later rounds, notably Taichi1082 granting Beck a controversial 10/10 in originality for a parallel world technique, claiming it had never been done before.

Saltient from MYPSC shocked spectators by revealing combos that used a cumulative 5 years of fingercross development that was largely unshared with the public. I.suk from UPSB became the first individual to win a world tournament more than once at the conclusion of the event.

Scoring System

For rounds 2-6 the combos are scored out of a maximum of 40.[4] These points are distributed among 5 criteria, of which 2 have 3 additional sub-criteria:

  • Execution (12 points)
    • Control (5 points)
    • Refinement (4 points)
    • Tempo (3 points)
  • Difficulty (10 points)
  • Originality (10 points)
  • Effectiveness (8 points)
    • Integration (3 points)
    • Density (3 points)
    • Effect (2 points)
  • Presentation (up to 2 points can be deducted)

For round 1 only the order of spinners and comments are required, and scores are optional.

Tournament Structure

The first two rounds consisted of two group phases, in which the top 4 ranked spinners by the judges would pass to the next round. In Round 1 there were 8 groups, and Round 2 there were 4 groups. Due to the amount of people signing up being a prime number, Group H in the first round had 9 participants instead of 10.

Afterwards, the remaining 16 spinners competed in a series of single elimination matches for the last four rounds, until a winner is declared. A third place match was also held for the losing participants of Round 5.

Judges

The competition had five judges, who were selected through a trial judging screening process out of a number of applicants:
