Spider Spin

Le0n performs Middle Ring Spider Spin.

First performed by Kam from UPSB, the Spider Spin is a topspin trick where the mod spins on the back of the flexed middle and ring fingers. In the original Spider Spin, the hand resembles Spiderman’s hand when throwing webs.

The normal of the trick turns in the counter-clockwise direction when viewed from above, and the reverse turns clockwise.

The trick is sometimes abbreviated as "SS".

History

Spider Spin was first performed by Kam in 2002 after he was inspired by the release of the movie "Spider-Man" on May 3rd, 2002. A video demonstrating the trick was uploaded onto Pentix on November 20th, 2002.

The trick remained a novelty until February 2008 when Le0n from GPC released his "New PenSpinning Trick-Concepts" video. In it, he demonstrated hybrids linking in and out of shadow topspins and Spider Spins that he called "Devil's Conversion" and "Reconversion". He also demonstrated Spider Spin -> FL Thumb Around, which would later be adopted into power tricks once that field of pen spinning had been defined.

In June 2011, Menowa* from JEB uploaded a video titled "蜘蛛旋転" English: Spider Spin where he performed Spider Spin -> FL TA x21. Previously Javascript from PPSC had performed the trick, but not to the same level. Only a month later on July 16th, 2011 he uploaded another video "蜘蛛旋転　改 (advanced spiderspin??)" where he performed Ring Spider Spin -> FL TA x12. This led several other power spinners to begin picking up on the tricks too, in preparation for the Pen Spinning World Cup 2012, where multiple early variations of continuous Spider Spin would be used. In the fourth round of the competition Menowa* performed Spider Spin -> FL Index Around, popularizing variations outside of the original FL TA version. He would also go on to show Ring Spider Spin -> FL IA in JEBT 2012 and Ring Spider Spin -> FL MA in the Pen Spinning World Cup 2014 Round 2.

These developments led to "Spider Spin" being used to refer informally to "Spider Spin -> FL TA" in common use, as the popularity of the continuous trick picked up.

In the Pen Spinning World Tournament 2015 Round 2 i.suk from UPSB submitted a combo that contained the new variation Mirrored Powerpass Reverse -> Ring Spider Spin x2. The combo lost the battle but popularized a new variation of Spider Spin.

Variations

On other fingers

The trick can be performed on other finger combinations. When performed on only the ring finger it was originally named Advanced Spider Spin by Menowa* and sometimes referred to by the informal abbreviation ASS. Formally the variations are known as: (Fingers Involved) Spider Spin. For example: Index Middle Spider Spin, Ring Spider Spin.

As a continuous trick

After 2011 various continuous variants began to adapt the trick into the existing category of power tricks.

Spider Spin -> Fingerless Arounds

These were the first continuous variations, and include a variety of the arounds:

• Spider Spin -> FL FingerAround
• Spider Spin -> Pun Kan
• Spider Spin -> Bust

Within the category of Spider Spin -> FL FingerAround there are several variations more common than others:

• Spider Spin 23 -> FL IndexAround
• Spider Spin 2 -> FL IndexAround
• Spider Spin 3 -> FL MiddleAround
• Spider Spin 4 -> FL RingAround

These are sometimes abbreviated down to the forms of "Ring SS -> FL MA" or "RSS -> FL MA" and similar.

Spider Spin -> Powerpasses

A more recent development that makes use of the Mirrored Powerpass Reverse, it has two main variations:

• Spider Spin 3 -> Mirrored Powerpass Reverse 3*>12>3*
• Spider Spin 4 -> Mirrored Powerpass Reverse 4*>12>23>4*

These are sometimes abbreviated to "MPR Ring SS" and "MPR Pinky SS".

There are a few common aerial variations of the above tricks, listed below are their common names with their informal breakdowns:

• Aerial Spider Spin -> FL TA = Spider Spin -> FL TA 1.0 ~ Index Spread 1.0 ~ FL TA 0.5
• Aerial MPR Ring SS = Mirrored Powerpass Reverse 3*>12>3* -> Spider Spin 3* 0.5 ~ Aerial Release 3*-* 0.5

Note the added complexity of breaking down the powerpass variation. The powerpass aerial is sometimes called "MPR SS Pop" to refer to its similarity with the Pop Spin trick.
