S777

From Fen Spinner Wiki

S777 was an FPSB spinner who won the Pen Spinning World Tournament in 2011[1]. His technical spinning style was characterised by his use of extreme difficulty, deliberate control over tempo[2] and use of short, light pen mods that were considered considerably handicapped for the level of spinning he was performing.

History

S777 began spinning around September 2006. When introducing his two-year solo on 2 September 2008, he described having spent two years in the hobby; in July 2013 he reported six years and ten months of experience. [3][2]His early spinning was characterised by his rapid learning of tricks and linkages in a condensed time frame.

By 2008 he was representing FPSB in the World Cup. He reached the third round of the 2009 World Tournament, where he was eliminated by Spinnerpeem, and later submitted videos for six stages of the 2010 FPSB tournament. In 2011 he won the World Tournament, defeating Kin in the final.[4][5][6][1]

After his world title, he took a prolonged break to concentrate on his studies. In his 2013 introduction he described a two-year pause to enter a school in Palaiseau. He nevertheless released a promotional demonstration in July 2012, explaining that it did not mark a return to regular spinning activity.[2][7]

In July 2013 he returned to FPSB discussion and released Moonlight Session, which PenSpinning.fr presented as his return. In his introduction he described himself as rusty and said that he hoped to make more videos.[2][8]

Solo videos

Two-year solo

Introduced on FPSB on 2 September 2008. S777 credited Armand, also known as Blackdiamond, with editing and dedicated the video to Armand and Antoine. His accompanying post emphasized the enjoyment of spinning and the human experiences he had gained through the hobby.[3]

Third-year video

A video titled s777 third year was featured by PenSpinning.fr on 27 May 2010.[9]

Fourth-year solo

Featured by PenSpinning.fr on 5 December 2010.[10]

2012 promo / Six-years solo

Released on 31 July 2012 as a promotional demonstration. Forum discussions also called this video his six-years solo. It combined technical experiments with more conventional spinning.[7][11]

Moonlight Session

Featured on 30 July 2013, following his return to FPSB discussion.[8]

Influential spinning and ideas

Spider style

In July 2013, S777 explained his understanding of spider style as an approach in which the visual effect of finger movement takes precedence over the movement of the mod alone. He contrasted restrained finger motion in older Korean styles with the expressive movement of the fingers, hand and arm associated with Bonkura, Key3, Fratleym, himself, Nekura and Fel2fram. He also discussed how camera position and pen choice could direct attention toward the hand.[2]

S777 credited Bonkura with first proposing this approach and used an analogy between classicism and romanticism to explain the stylistic distinction. His post documents his own interpretation of spider style and its history.[2]

Creativity and aesthetics

In a December 2009 UPSB discussion, S777 argued that a spinner's intentions and combo design mattered beyond finger dexterity. He discussed motivation, learning order and coordination, and emphasized the development of new links that were both smooth and visually effective.[12]

He also questioned the emphasis placed on difficult tricks in competition. Discussing the 2009 World Tournament final, he argued that difficulty should contribute to a combo's beauty rather than become its sole purpose. As an example, he said that he had included a left-handed backfall 1.5 in his third-round submission for tournament purposes, but would have chosen differently for a collaboration video.[13]

Two-pen spinning and stalls

S777's 2012 demonstration included two-pen-one-hand backfall work, double-bust sequences with different catches, and stalls. In his accompanying explanation, he distinguished a section focused on technical novelty from a more conventional section and described his attempt to combine new material with attractive spinning.[14]

The video received both praise for its control and discussion of its aesthetics. Although S777 described some sequences as new, i.suk pointed to earlier two-pen work by Pashas. The discussion therefore documents experimentation rather than establishing that S777 invented two-pen-one-hand spinning.[11]

His earlier two-pen-two-hand work was also mentioned in later technical writing. In 2019, i.suk named him among spinners who had used brief two-pen-two-hand applications before more extensive theoretical approaches were developed.[15]

Continuous tricks and reported feats

Historical FPSB and UPSB lists recorded a number of performances by S777. These entries describe feats reported at the time; they should not all be read as uncontested or currently standing world records.[16][17]

Performance Historical report Video / notes
Thumbspin reverse 10.0 in the 2008 list; 9.5 in the 2012 list Video. The lists disagree on the rotation count.
Thumbaround extended bust 50 Video. Category definitions were disputed in the contemporary discussion.
Continuous fingerless thumbaround 31 Video.
Fingerpass, one minute 83 Video, reported in October 2008.
Fingerpass with two pens and two hands, thirty seconds 79 Video. A contemporary reply noted that this was not an accepted record category.
Ring–middle backaround 2.0 147 Listed in 2012, below Crinix's 179.
Palmspin reverse 10.5 Listed in 2012.
Backfall 3.5 Video, also linked in i.suk's 2016 compilation.[18]

Collaboration videos

S777 and Sig organized S&S in 2007 and S&S 2nd in 2008, according to Kay's retrospective account.[19]

He directed FPSB 4th, with the main editing credited to SKyblue and 3D work to Neptune. The surviving upload was published in November 2010.[20]

In his 2013 introduction, he also named Pro & Beginners II and Grip Aviaire among the collaborations in which he had participated.[2] Other surviving contribution clips include:

Community involvement

S777 participated in FPSB and international forum discussions about learning, aesthetics and community organization. In a discussion of experienced members and selection decisions, he argued against judging a spinner's contribution chiefly by their forum presence and advocated hearing the views of accomplished spinners. He also stated that he had declined a large World Tournament judging workload.[22]

He expressed concern about the unauthorized circulation of unreleased footage. In June 2009, he objected to combos being included in a promotional video without his permission.[23]

S777 MX

S777 created the S777 MX[24], a single-capped mod documented in his FPSB tutorial of 3 August 2009. The construction uses a G1 body and front components, together with a cap assembly incorporating a marker cap and RSVP cap. His tutorial gives a length of approximately 19.5–20 cm and a weight of about 12 g without putty, or 14 g for his own example, balanced around the centre of the pen.[24] A later PenSpinning.fr tutorial explicitly credits him with inventing the mod.[25]

His tutorial video includes English subtitles.

Other pens and mods

In July 2013, he listed a double-capped Dong-a, Rushon and an eraser pen among his preferred pens.[2] He was also associated with the KillerGel, which was created by Aaa.[26] Another pen mod that he would infrequently use was the S777 black mod.

Vôre-Tèx later described making a fully gold single-capped mod at S777's request. The maker dated the design's invention to mid-2017.[27]

Legacy

S777's influence is visible in later spinners' attempts to reproduce his techniques. In October 2011, GeeGeeGee explicitly credited him as the inspiration for a continuous fingerless thumbaround 1.5 demonstration. His Rushon spinning and palm-side inverse-bust or inverse-backaround movements also became subjects of identification and imitation threads.[30][31]

His World Tournament title, videos and writings document both competitive achievement and an approach to spinning in which difficulty, originality and expressive movement were considered together.[1][13][2]
