Hibachi Mod – Ponkotu’s version

From Fen Spinner Wiki

Hibachi Mod – Ponkotu's version is a variation of the Hibachi mod credited to Ponkotu. It uses an Akashiya brush-pen barrel. A related single-sided Akashiya build was used by Hibachi, but its relationship to Ponkotu's version is unconfirmed.[1][2]

Construction

This version combines a layered front grip with a nested two-cap rear assembly.[1]

Parts needed

  • 1 Akashiya brush pen (barrel)
  • 1 Pentel Keityo (KT) (large cap)
  • 1 Sailor Gel or IC Liquid (cap)
  • 1 Tombow Reporter 2 (grip)
  • 1 Pilot G3 (grip)
  • 1 Pilot G2 (grip)
  • 1 Signo DX (grip)
  • 1 Metallic Gel (tip)
  • 1 Zebra Jell.Be (tip)
  • Dong-A Anyball grips: sections of 4 stripes, 5 stripes, and three 2-stripe sections

Text tutorial

  1. Empty the Akashiya barrel. Fit the Metallic Gel tip followed by the Jell.Be tip, and add regular tape around the assembly.
  2. Over the tip assembly, fit 4 Anyball stripes followed by the G2 grip.

  3. Add one full Anyball grip and another 4 stripes over the previous assembly.

  4. Remove the Reporter grip as shown below. Put the Reporter grip over the Anyball grip, then add a Signo grip cut to a suitable length at the front.

  5. The front is assembled. Split the G3 grip into smooth and ridged sections; keep those sections and do not use the holed part.

  6. Hollow the Keityo cap. Put the smooth G3 section over the cap and the ridged section inside it, with 2 Anyball stripes on the cap.

  7. Remove the clip and small protruding plastic tip from the Sailor cap, then fit that cap over the Keityo cap.
  8. Add one Anyball grip over the cap, then about half a grip over it.

  9. Fit the cap assembly on the rear of the Akashiya barrel.

The single-sided Akashiya mod used by Hibachi is heavy and measures about 21 cm before the barrel is shortened. It was once mistaken for a double-ended pen. Its construction changed over time; the method below represents one commonly known build. It is not confirmed to be the same as Ponkotu's version.[2]

  • 1 Akashiya new brush pen (barrel)
  • 1 Tombow Reporter 3 (grip)
  • 1 Pilot G2 (grip)
  • 1 Pilot G3 (grip)
  • 1 Zebra Jell.Be (tip)
  • 1 Signo (grip)
  • 1 Sailor Gel cap-type pen (cap)
  • 1 Metallic Gel (tip)
  • 1 Keichō sign pen (cap)
  • Many Anyball grips
  1. Disassemble the Akashiya pen, remove its shaft and inner parts, and replace the rear cap. Shorten the barrel if desired.
  2. Fit the Metallic Gel tip and then the Jell.Be tip on the Akashiya tip.
  3. Add Anyball grip sections described as 1.5 blocks, then 2 blocks, followed by the G2 grip.
  4. Over that assembly, add 2 Anyball blocks, then about 13 Anyball blocks.
  5. Put the Reporter grip over the previous section and add a Signo grip cut to a suitable length.
  6. Split the G3 grip into the grooved and smooth portions; do not use the holed portion.
  7. Hollow the Keichō cap.
  8. Put 2 Anyball blocks on the Keichō cap, followed by the smooth G3 grip; place the grooved section at the tip end.
  9. Remove the Sailor Gel cap clip and cut off the small protruding tip.
  10. Fit the Sailor cap over the assembly from step 8.
  11. Add about 14 Anyball blocks over the Sailor cap.
  12. Add about 5 more Anyball blocks.
  13. Join the cap and Akashiya body.
