After frequent disagreements with staff from [[The Workshop]] leading up to September that year, Fen Spinner became public and the membership greatly increased, claiming to be a new community separate from those typically associated with [[UPSB]]. The community hub is primarily a public Discord server with a secondary website, [[Fen Spinner Wiki]]. The community participated in SpinFest 2021 and 2023, as well as the [[Pen Spinning World Cup 2022]], which it won.
==History==
Fen Spinner was established as a Discord server on 30 July 2020 to serve as a social hub for several members of the private team OPSD to interact with non-members. Initially characterized by minimal moderation and informal structure, the server functioned primarily as a casual hangout space.

Prior to 11 September 2020, a series of long-standing tensions began to reshape the server’s direction. Prior disagreements had emerged between members of Fen Spinner and the administration of The Workshop, with criticisms directed at the latter’s approach to moderation. Concerns included perceived heavy-handed enforcement, lack of responsiveness to community feedback, and inconsistent application of rules. Although these critiques were largely dismissed at the time, they contributed to the eventual dissolution of The Workshop.

The name "Fen Spinner" comes from the Fennec Fox<ref>[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fennec_fox Wikipedia article on Fennec Foxes]</ref>, the mascot animal of the community. The animal is sometimes referred to as a "Fen" and sounded similar to "Pen", so the community name was chosen as a pun.
===Split from The Workshop===
[[File:Fentember.jpg|thumb|200px|The September 11th 2020 call and the infamous "Fentember 11th" message]]On 11 September 2020, members of Fen Spinner initiated what became the largest voice call on The Workshop server, reaching the channel’s maximum capacity of 25 simultaneous users. Moderators declined invitations to participate. During the event, the #voice-text channel saw a surge in activity, with posts ranging from pen spinning discussions to unrelated content. Although memes and off-topic messages had appeared previously, the volume during this call was unprecedented.

The administrator Coffeelucky requested that participants leave the channel and instead use a group chat call, which was limited to 10 users—less than half of those present. This suggestion was met with criticism, and the proposal later shifted to creating a new server entirely. During the call, concerns were raised about moderation practices, particularly the perception that enforcement disproportionately targeted specific individuals rather than applying consistent rules. A meme referencing the September 11 attacks was posted in relation to the event.

The call continued into the early hours of 12 September. No immediate disciplinary actions were taken, but overnight, the administration issued bans, mutes, and warnings citing the generic reason of "Spam." Notably, Varoza was banned for seven days, and Zxntle was muted for 14 days. It took approximately two weeks for the community to uncover the specific reasons behind these actions. Many users criticized the vague and delayed explanations, which remained unclear until Varoza was unbanned.

The administration later clarified that Zxntle had been muted for replying "bruh" to Coffeelucky, and that Varoza had been warned—not banned—for posting the offensive meme. The exact reason for Varoza’s ban remains unknown. Following the incident, moderator abc resigned. The administration alleged that abc had been harassed, though screenshots circulated showing abc engaging in personal attacks against other users. In the aftermath, several active members left The Workshop in protest. Some moderators, including DarKT, described the departing users as "troublemakers," despite one of them having previously been offered a moderator position.

As a result of these events, a significant portion of the active English-speaking community migrated to Fen Spinner, which grew from approximately 10 members to several hundred.

===SpinFest 2021===

Initial plans for a parody as the first video from Fen Spinner were quickly scrapped, with plans being drawn for a show of the community's ability. On April 12th 2021, after months of editing and filming, "Fen Spinner 1st" was released<ref>[https://twitter.com/Spinfest/status/1381843299435167745 Tweet of Fen Spinner 1st released to SpinFest]</ref> as the SpinFest submission, a surprise to detractors who claimed a troll CV would be submitted. Edited by Varoza, it featured extensive 3D graphics and special effects, and featured 11 spinners.

===Further CVs and World Tournament 2021===
A collaboration video was planned for a crossover with [[LSPSC]], but the project was suspended after LSPSC closed in July 2021.

On July 30th 2021 a minicombo collaboration video "1 Year of Fen Spinner"<ref>[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7QJPKzkpTmM 1 Year of Fen Spinner on YouTube]</ref> was released, with videos from many of the active Fen Spinner members.

Fen Spinner expressed interest in joining the [[Pen Spinning World Tournament 2021]], but a decision by the [[Pen Spinning Board of Directors]] was made to lump the community in with [[The Workshop]] and those still identifying as [[UPSB]], with [[Padrace]] as manager and the community named as the '''English Speaking Pen-spinning Collective''' (ESPC). The rule itself currently only applies to Fen Spinner, and previous World Tournaments allowed new boards and boards split from other boards to sign up, famously Korean and German boards. ===Spin Awards 2021===

With no members of the Spin Awards committee wishing to step up and run the event, Fen Spinner volunteered and ran Spin Awards 2021, using a complicated multiple choice voting system and a restyling of the event to look more professional. Among other changes, the event was restructured to have an individual representative and individual advisor from each community to handle fair voting, nominations and communicating the event with their own communities.

Past Spin Awards had a limited set of representatives, typically limited to a friend group nature like the [[Pen Spinning Board of Directors]], and the list of award recipients was chosen by the event organizer, Coffeelucky, after some consultation. This made the past Spin Awards controversial as often individual candidates were missed in nominations and voting, with a heavy bias towards popular figures.

The 2021 event also held voting in early 2022 in order to accurately receive combos later in the year from sources like the JapEn CV, which is typically released on Christmas day. Following this, the results compilation and editing process took until February 27th for the release of the awards, with some people such as Coffeelucky who had refused to assist the editing process complaining publicly about the internally communicated delays.

After the release of the videos, Fen Spinner announced stepping down from running Spin Awards, citing difficulties and political infighting bogging down the process of running the event. With no individuals willing to have Spin Awards handed off to them, the server was given to FPSB's Patchwork, and fell into disuse shortly after with the event no longer being held.

===Leadership changes, World Cup 2022 and Pen Spinning Olympics 2022===
In late 2021 a key change was [[Nine]] from [[UPSB]] joining Fen Spinner and soon making his way into the leadership of the community, with Allwars eventually departing the community for the second time. Originally Fen Spinner was to join with members of [[The Workshop]] to create a [[World Cup]] team, but the alliance was shaky and eventually broken by another Workshop conflict. The decision was made to form a new World Cup team consisting entirely of Fen Spinner members: '''Final Boss'''. Soon after these tensions resulted in Nine and Varoza being permanently banned from the workshop shortly after the tournament started.

Final Boss came 3rd in the 1st round of the [[Pen Spinning World Cup 2022]], and defeated in all categories the strongest team from [[PSH]]: '''BlackMagic''' in round 2. In round 3, they defeated the rival team they originally split away from before the tournament: '''The Five Fingers of Sublime Pen''', captained by [[Padrace]]. Eventually, they would defeat [[JEB]]'s '''Eastern Reunion''' in the final round in all categories, winning the World Cup. The team's victories were particularly crushing as Final Boss won 14/15 round points, only losing a single battle in the event. The single lost battle was controversial, as Krogan was suggested to freestyle and troll his opponent on purpose while preparing for the next round, such was the confidence that Final Boss would win regardless.

In the [[Pen Spinning Olympics 2022]], Fen Spinner members [[Reboot]] and ZeGentleman entered the power category, with Reboot placing 1st and ZeGentleman 3rd. Barney entered the Wipers category as "KyorYuuNa", coming 4th place after not submitting for the final round.

===Spinfest 2023, the rise of Spindys and fall of The Workshop===

The second official CV of the board, '''[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RoyGJsclm_k FEN 2ND | Spinfest 2023]''' was released on June 25th, 2023, with a strong roster comprising almost all of the '''Final Boss''' team members and other Fen Spinner members.

On its release the manager of the Spinfest Twitter account, Coffeelucky, shared it with a caption stating that the video had "Excessive bright flashing lights" advising people not to watch it. In fact, the CV had been screened to a member with photosensitive epilepsy beforehand and confirmed not to have any adverse effects before release.

During this period the new community [[Spindys]] began to gain traction. Tilt, a Fen Spinner member for several years had started a YouTube channel that attracted many new spinners to the hobby. With the decline in activity in The Workshop, that same activity moved over to Spindys, with Fen Spinner and Spindys cooperating for the English-speaking pen spinning community. The Workshop would later close for good on October 20th, 2024.

Over time, this grew to become the largest pen spinning wiki project ever made, dwarfing the original UPSB projects and other competitors. In 2025 a new responsive frontend and homepage was added to the wiki as part of a wider rollout of updates to the site.

Many users criticized the vague and delayed explanations, which remained unclear until Varoza was unbanned.

The administration later clarified that Zxntle had been muted for replying "bruh" to Coffeelucky, and that Varoza had been warned—not banned—for posting the offensive meme. The exact reason for Varoza’s ban remains unknown. Following the incident, moderator abc resigned. The administration alleged that abc had been harassed, though screenshots circulated showing abc engaging in personal attacks against other users. In the aftermath, several active members left The Workshop in protest. Some moderators, including DarKT, described the departing users as "troublemakers," despite one of them having previously been offered a moderator position.

As a result of these events, a significant portion of the active English-speaking community migrated to Fen Spinner, which grew from approximately 10 members to several hundred.

With no members of the Spin Awards committee wishing to step up and run the event, Fen Spinner volunteered and ran Spin Awards 2021, using a complicated multiple choice voting system and a restyling of the event to look more professional. Among other changes, the event was restructured to have an individual representative and individual advisor from each community to handle fair voting, nominations and communicating the event with their own communities.

Past Spin Awards had a limited set of representatives, typically limited to a friend group nature like the [[Pen Spinning Board of Directors]], and the list of award recipients was chosen by the event organizer, Coffeelucky, after some consultation. This made the past Spin Awards controversial as often individual candidates were missed in nominations and voting, with a heavy bias towards popular figures.

The 2021 event also held voting in early 2022 in order to accurately receive combos later in the year from sources like the JapEn CV, which is typically released on Christmas day. Following this, the results compilation and editing process took until February 27th for the release of the awards, with some people such as Coffeelucky who had refused to assist the editing process complaining publicly about the internally communicated delays.

After the release of the videos, Fen Spinner announced stepping down from running Spin Awards, citing difficulties and political infighting bogging down the process of running the event. With no individuals willing to have Spin Awards handed off to them, the server was given to FPSB's Patchwork, and fell into disuse shortly after with the event no longer being held.

===Leadership changes, World Cup 2022 and Pen Spinning Olympics 2022===
In late 2021 a key change was [[Nine]] from [[UPSB]] joining Fen Spinner and soon making his way into the leadership of the community, with Allwars eventually departing the community for the second time. Originally Fen Spinner was to join with members of [[The Workshop]] to create a [[World Cup]] team, but the alliance was shaky and eventually broken by another Workshop conflict. The decision was made to form a new World Cup team consisting entirely of Fen Spinner members: '''Final Boss'''. Soon after these tensions resulted in Nine and Varoza being permanently banned from the workshop shortly after the tournament started.

In round 3, they defeated the rival team they originally split away from before the tournament: '''The Five Fingers of Sublime Pen''', captained by [[Padrace]]. Eventually, they would defeat [[JEB]]'s '''Eastern Reunion''' in the final round in all categories, winning the World Cup. The team's victories were particularly crushing as Final Boss won 14/15 round points, only losing a single battle in the event. The single lost battle was controversial, as Krogan was suggested to freestyle and troll his opponent on purpose while preparing for the next round, such was the confidence that Final Boss would win regardless.

===Spinfest 2023, the rise of Spindys and fall of The Workshop===

The second official CV of the board, '''[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RoyGJsclm_k FEN 2ND | Spinfest 2023]''' was released on June 25th, 2023, with a strong roster comprising almost all of the '''Final Boss''' team members and other Fen Spinner members.

On its release the manager of the Spinfest Twitter account, Coffeelucky, shared it with a caption stating that the video had "Excessive bright flashing lights" advising people not to watch it. In fact, the CV had been screened to a member with photosensitive epilepsy beforehand and confirmed not to have any adverse effects before release.

During this period the new community [[Spindys]] began to gain traction. Tilt, a Fen Spinner member for several years had started a YouTube channel that attracted many new spinners to the hobby. With the decline in activity in The Workshop, that same activity moved over to Spindys, with Fen Spinner and Spindys cooperating for the English-speaking pen spinning community. The Workshop would later close for good on October 20th, 2024.

==Tournament Structure==

Placements were determined by averaging the ranks assigned by the judges.

In the second group phase, serpentine seeding was used to place spinners into groups, aiming to distribute average performance levels evenly among members. This marked a significant change from previous World Tournaments, where initial group seeding had been random. The top four spinners in each group, based on average rank, progressed to the next round.

From Round 3 onward, the remaining 16 contestants competed in a single‑elimination format for the final four rounds. Round 3 seeding matched participants ranked 1 against 4 and 2 against 3. In Round 4, winners from the 1‑versus‑4 battles were drawn at random against winners from the 2‑versus‑3 battles. Round 5 paired the winner of the Round 3 rank‑1 bracket with the winner of the Round 3 rank‑2 bracket. Round 6 featured the final two contestants in the title match, along with a third‑place battle between the semifinal losers.

==Tournament Structure==
The tournament consisted of six rounds, with the first two serving as group phases.<ref>[https://wt25.penspinning.world/#rulebook Pen Spinning World Tournament 2025 official rulebook]</ref> In the first group phase, all combos were considered part of a single group, and the top 32 spinners advanced to the next round. Placements were determined by averaging the ranks assigned by the judges.

In the second group phase, serpentine seeding was used to place spinners into groups, aiming to distribute average performance levels evenly among members. This marked a significant change from previous World Tournaments, where initial group seeding had been random. The top four spinners in each group, based on average rank, progressed to the next round.

From Round 3 onward, the remaining 16 contestants competed in a single‑elimination format for the final four rounds. Round 3 seeding matched participants ranked 1 against 4 and 2 against 3. In Round 4, winners from the 1‑versus‑4 battles were drawn at random against winners from the 2‑versus‑3 battles. Round 5 paired the winner of the Round 3 rank‑1 bracket with the winner of the Round 3 rank‑2 bracket. Round 6 featured the final two contestants in the title match, along with a third‑place battle between the semifinal losers.

Videos are scored on a forty point scoring system split into four ten point categories, which themselves have three sub-criteria suggestions for guiding scoring in those categories:

Scores could be incremented in half points for greater precision, and ties were not permitted in scoring.

==Tournament Structure==
The tournament consisted of six rounds, with the first two serving as group phases.<ref>[https://wt25.penspinning.world/#rulebook Pen Spinning World Tournament 2025 official rulebook]</ref> In the first group phase, all combos were considered part of a single group, and the top 32 spinners advanced to the next round. Placements were determined by averaging the ranks assigned by the judges.

In the second group phase, serpentine seeding was used to place spinners into groups, aiming to distribute average performance levels evenly among members. This marked a significant change from previous World Tournaments, where initial group seeding had been random. The top four spinners in each group, based on average rank, progressed to the next round.

From Round 3 onward, the remaining 16 contestants competed in a single‑elimination format for the final four rounds. Round 3 seeding matched participants ranked 1 against 4 and 2 against 3. In Round 4, winners from the 1‑versus‑4 battles were drawn at random against winners from the 2‑versus‑3 battles. Round 5 paired the winner of the Round 3 rank‑1 bracket with the winner of the Round 3 rank‑2 bracket. Round 6 featured the final two contestants in the title match, along with a third‑place battle between the semifinal losers.

This is usually done in palm side or palm down to emphasize the fact that the pen is actually held by the finger and it’s not just balanced over it.

Wipers are tricks performed while holding the pen at the ends and using that point as a pivot, creating rotation with gravity and or momentum generated by the arm and wrist. Wipers generally lend themselves to types of spinning that heavily use them as it's much easier to transition from wiper to wiper than wiper to non-wiper and vice versa, but they can be used in any style due to their sheer diversity and versatility.

The normal is palm-side and rotates counter-clockwise as the pen follows gravity, and the reverse rotates clockwise as it goes against gravity.

==History==

Although tricks from the wiper family like the infinity had been known since the year 2000, it was in November of 2002 when Tohlz from PenstudioZ named wiper and its reverse:

“Wiper got its name from the idea of the car screen wiper (the thing
which wipe the car screen when raining). The trick looks similar to a car
screen wiper and can be link to other tricks. A very nice and simple trick for
beginners to learn.”

In Japan, the name ハーフウィンドミル (half windmill) originated some-
time around 2002-2003, although its exact origin isn’t known. The direction of rotation of the Japanese half windmill is opposite that of a wiper. It was
in none of the early web pages; its origin is in the bulletin boards. One of
the earliest instances of the trick is from 2003, in a Shitaraba thread.
One theory is that someone gave the name “windmill” to figure 8 so a single wiper became “half windmill”. Some spinners remember that use, and it’s also written down in Aysh’s wiki. Another theory is that the trick “windmill” was listed at some point in Hideaki’s website, so people speculated what half a windmill would be. However, there’s no trace on the archived version of the website of that ever happening. Another theory is that the mysterious “windmill” trick was a direct translation of the Korean 윈드밀 (windmill), which is a twisted sonic. This is unlikely since there are no other pen spinning loanwords from Korean in Japanese.

The trick was created by Tohlz in 2003. In PenstudioZ, he explains how he found it while doing wiper harmonic. He gave it that name since it looked like a horizontal 8 when done correctly, and infinity was already taken.

===Infinity===
Another continuous but slightly more complex linkage or [[minicombo]] notated as such: Wiper T1 -> PD Pass T1-12 -> PD Wiper Rev 12 -> Pass Rev 12-T1.

Double, triple, and quadruple versions are rarely used terms that describe including the middle, ring, and pinky fingers respectively to extend the linkage.

It is the first wiper minicombo to ever be found. The first person to record the trick was Szeto, who called it infinity loop. Kam then listed the trick on Pentix as infinity, which is the name that has stuck. Kam considered including it among the fundamentals, but didn’t do so in the end. However, modern trick guides like Megas’ trick learning order do include it as a fundamental.

Any wiper performed with at least one finger holding the pen in the fingercross position. They can vary to being as simple as holding the pen with a crossed finger or holding the pen within the crossing.

===Palm===
Wipers can be performed using just one finger by holding the pen against the palm with a curled finger.

Notably utilized by TMRW of JEB, wipers can be performed using fingers from both hands which significantly boosts the difficulty.

The '''PMWT 2021''' or '''Pen Modding World Tournament 2021''' is the internationnal tournament of [[penmodding]]. It was announced on [[IPMC]] and organised by Skadi.

In this tournament, participants had to make pen mods to appeal to two discrete panels of judges, spinning and modding judges. Round 1 was conducted with photographs of the mods submitted online, but later rounds required sending the mods to judges. Participants were encouraged to write a small description for their mods.

Because of logistical problems that arose regarding the shipping of the pen mods in round 2 and beyond, the tournament was canceled after round 1.

Sonics are a category of tricks in which the fingerslot transfer of a fingerswitch is fully accompanied by a conical charge. They often, but not always, end in a different slot than the one they started in. Sonics are among the most versatile and common tricks as they are compatible with almost any style and easily integrate with and hybridize with other trick families. They are also a rich source to use as a diversifying tool as they range from being simple to complex and extremely difficult, with more variations yet to be discovered especially in the field of xpxh.

The baseline sonic is a [[Fundamental Tricks#Sonic|fundamental trick]] that consists of two [[Fingerswitch|fingerswitches]] between three separate slots, while performing one complete conical [[charge]] spin. During the second slot the fingers at the extremities solely hold the pen at the same time.

==History==
The name ソニック (sonic) was given by Hideaki. Then, Kam added its translation to Pentix. The trick was also discovered independently by others, like sula_la (his name, 雙龍取水, means the twin dragons fetch water) and Szeto, who gave names to three slot combinations.

The Korean name, 계단 (stairs), originated independently from the rest. Names for sonic and its basic variations were used since the beginning of the board. But it wasn’t until the 2005 NX lecture when they were standarized into using the 역 (reverse) and 내 (inverse) modifiers.

==Variations==

===Inverse Sonic===
The inverse sonic is mechanically the same, but doing it standalone usually includes a total of 2.0 rotations as opposed to only 1.0 rotations in non-inverse variations. This is due to spinners holding the pen in the same starting position for both tricks despite there being 0.5 rotations of difference in the starting positions if one were to perform them one-to-one. Thus, the initial 0.5 rotations are to achieve the starting position of the inverse sonic, 1.0 rotations are performed for the fundamental mechanic, and the final 0.5 rotations bring the ending position of the inverse sonic to that of the non-inverse variations.

===Demon's Sonic===
The demon's sonic (or demon sonic) is a baseline sonic interrupted with a twisted sonic. It is not a specific sonic variation but rather denotes one specific linkage with the following notation: sonic 34-24 ~ twisted sonic 24-12. Modifiers are almost never used (e.g. mirrored demon's sonic) as those links are often notated in full.

Interrupting a twisted sonic with a baseline sonic yields the angel's sonic (or angel sonic), but this name is rarely referenced. It is notated as such: twisted sonic 34-13 ~ sonic 13-12.

===Sonic Clip===
A term rarely used in practice which denotes charges performed in the intermediate slot while the pen is held by the extremities during a sonic. (e.g. performing charge 13 from a sonic 23-12).

===Side Sonic===
The side additive is applied to a sonic variation when the center finger (or at least one of the those fingers) is inverted during execution. It is mostly relevant to baseline sonic and flush sonic variations.

===Tipped Sonic===
Sonics performed using tipped charges rather than full charges. They are most commonly performed using a thumb slot.

===I-Sonic===
A palm up sonic starting in 23 that stops completely halfway through in 13. When performed starting in the wiper-out position and with the palm facing the camera, the pen is hidden behind the hand, hence, the 'i' in the name which stands for 'invisible'.
Two variations of the trick exist where one is done by simply holding the pen using the fingers only where another variation is done by holding the pen between a finger and the back of the arm.

These are variations that have the sonic name but do not contain any portion of a sonic trick.

==History==
The pun kan (translated from Thai as 'arm coil') was invented by Pyralux and was originally called the 'arm bak', but it would be Spinnerpeem who popularized the trick and gave it its current name.

The backaround originated from David Weis in 1999 as an attempt to perform continuous arounds without using the fingers to push the pen.
